Hot and humid weather conditions are affecting Cyprus on Friday, with temperatures expected to reach 40°C inland and relative humidity climbing above 70% in coastal areas and as high as 98% in Akamas.
The Department of Meteorology has issued a new yellow warning for high temperatures, which will be in effect between 1pm and 3pm. The maximum temperature inland is expected to reach around 40°C.
Meanwhile, former Department of Meteorology director Kleanthis Nicolaides told Sigmalive that humidity levels are noticeably higher than in recent days, particularly across low-lying and coastal areas.
Humidity reaches 98% in Akamas
Relative humidity in the Nicosia district is currently between 69% and 70%, according to Nicolaides, while levels in the mountains are below 50%.
At the highest peaks of the Troodos mountains, humidity drops significantly to around 25%.
The highest levels are being recorded near the coast, where relative humidity exceeds 70%. In the Akamas area, it has reached as high as 98%.
Nicolaides said the increased humidity is a normal weather phenomenon caused by moist air masses being carried inland from the sea by the sea breeze.
Humidity is expected to gradually decrease during the day as atmospheric conditions change.
Temperatures reach 40°C inland
Seasonal low pressure is affecting the region.
Cyprus weather will be mainly clear on Friday, although locally increased cloud cover is expected around midday and early afternoon, with isolated rain not ruled out in the mountains.
Temperatures will rise to 40°C inland, around 31°C on the south-western and western coasts, 34°C along the remaining coastal areas and 30°C in the higher mountains.
Winds will blow mainly from the south-west to north-west, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, later becoming locally strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort.
The sea will be slight.
Mist or fog possible overnight
Friday night will remain mainly clear, although increased low cloud will develop locally at times.
Later in the night and around dawn, mist or fog could form, mainly in eastern areas and inland.
Winds will blow mainly from the north-west to north-east, light and temporarily locally moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will remain slight.
Temperatures will fall to 22°C inland, around 23°C on the coast and 18°C in the higher mountains.
Hot weather to continue through weekend
The weekend and Monday will remain mainly clear.
Temperatures are not expected to change significantly and will remain above the climatological average, extending the spell of hot Cyprus weather into the beginning of next week.
