Yellow warning issued in Cyprus for 40°C heat

A yellow warning in Cyprus for extreme maximum temperature has been issued by the Department of Meteorology.

The warning comes into effect at 12:00 noon on Thursday and will remain in force until 5:00 in the afternoon of the same day.

Temperatures are expected to soar to 40°C inland and around 32°C in the mountains. The weather is influenced by seasonal low pressure.

Detailed forecast

Today, skies will be mostly clear, although locally increased cloud will appear in the afternoon, mainly in mountainous areas. Winds will initially be variable and light, around 3 Beaufort, gradually becoming mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough.

Temperatures will reach 40°C inland, around 34°C in the south-east, southern and northern coasts, and around 32°C in the remaining coastal areas as well as in the higher mountains.

Tonight, skies will remain mostly clear. In the early morning hours, localised low cloud and light fog may form, especially in southern and eastern coastal areas. Winds will blow north-westerly to north-easterly, and locally variable, light at 3 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough in the west, while elsewhere calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will fall to 22°C inland, around 24°C on the coasts and 21°C in the higher mountains.

On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the weather will be generally clear.

Temperatures will gradually rise until Saturday, with little change on Sunday, remaining above average for this time of year.
