The British Bases court in Dhekelia has ordered a three-day detention for a 30-year-old father and his 38-year-old partner, who are being investigated in connection with the deaths of two children found inside a vehicle in Xylofagou.
Investigation under way for negligent conduct
The pair are being investigated for alleged negligent conduct following the tragic incident, which has shocked the local community.
Authorities continue to examine CCTV footage, mobile phone data, and the vehicle in which the children were found.
Investigators have also confirmed that additional forensic analysis will be carried out, including technical checks on the car’s locking system in consultation with the manufacturer.
Evidence review and witness statements
Police from the British Bases are expected to take around 25 additional statements from residents living near the scene in Xylofagou.
Because many witnesses are foreign nationals, interpreters will be used during the process.
Investigators are also analysing extensive but poor-quality CCTV footage, which reportedly shows the two children playing inside the vehicle.
Court decision and legal reasoning
The court noted that the suspects are not yet formally charged but are under investigation.
While it found no immediate risk of interference with evidence, it ruled that detention was necessary due to a potential risk of flight, as the pair reportedly have no strong ties to Cyprus.
The judge also stressed the seriousness of the case and the need to prevent possible absconding while the investigation continues.
Ongoing forensic and investigative work
A forensic doctor is expected to examine the bodies, while mobile phone data – including calls, messages, locations, and social media activity – will also be reviewed.
Investigators continue to explore all possible scenarios, including whether any technical malfunction may have contributed to the incident.
