Two significant wildfires have erupted in Cyprus, with firefighting forces stretched across districts. While a blaze near Nicosia has been brought under control, a second wildfire in the Limassol district remains uncontrolled and dangerous, spreading rapidly across multiple communities.
Fire near Pedieos river – Nicosia district (Anageia–Dali)
According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, a wildfire broke out in the riverbed of the Pediaios River, between the communities of Anageia and Dali (Pano Deftera) in the Nicosia district. The fire consumed wild vegetation, trees, reeds, and even immobilised vehicles.
Though the fire developed dangerously close to residential areas, firefighters successfully protected nearby homes, though some properties sustained damage. The burnt area is estimated at three hectares, and Kettis confirmed that the fire is now manageable.
Firefighting efforts involved:
- Two aircraft
- Eight fire engines from the Fire Service
- Six vehicles from the Department of Forests
- Support from the volunteer group SupportCy
The cause of the fire will be investigated once full containment is achieved.
Uncontrolled wildfire in Limassol district – Malia, Omodos, Vasa
A second, far more severe wildfire is raging uncontrolled near the village of Malia in the Limassol district. The fire has spread rapidly to surrounding communities, particularly Omodos and Vasa, and is causing widespread destruction. The fire is now reportedly moving towards Vouni, and houses might be affected so evacuations have started.

Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis reported that:
- Extensive firefighting efforts are underway, involving personnel from the Fire Service, Department of Forests, District Administration, Civil Defence, and multiple volunteer groups
- Eight aircraft are currently engaged in aerial firefighting, with additional support expected from British Bases
- Ground forces are being reinforced from all districts across Cyprus
Reports from the scene confirm damage to homes, vehicles, and the ongoing rescue and evacuation of residents. The situation is fluid, with efforts focused on protecting lives and limiting further destruction.
On-site coordination is being led by Christoforos Stylianou, Limassol’s District Fire Supervisor, with Fire Chief Nikos Longinos heading to the front lines. The Minister of Justice, Marios Hartsiotis, also rushed to the scene to oversee the operation.
A mobile command centre has been activated, and authorities have ordered evacuations of homes in danger. The Police and Civil Defence are assisting in this effort.
Meanwhile, due to the fire, the Malia–Omodos and Malia–Arsos roads have been closed to traffic, according to an emergency announcement by the Cyprus Police.
Summary
While the fire in Nicosia district is under control thanks to a coordinated and swift response, the Limassol wildfire remains a major threat, actively spreading through forested and residential areas. Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid affected zones, follow official instructions, and remain vigilant as operations continue through the night.
