White House requests nearly $88 billion from Congress for Iran war

Date:

The US presidency has asked Congress to approve a supplemental US budget of around $88 billion, with the majority allocated to what it describes as “urgent needs” linked to the war against Iran.

According to documents submitted to Congress, the request outlines extensive spending priorities across defence, agriculture, energy and diplomatic security.

Defence funding forms bulk of package

More than $67 billion of the proposed US budget would go to the Pentagon, including operational costs tied to the US and Israeli military campaign against Iran, which reportedly began on 28 February.

The funding also includes resources to replenish ammunition stockpiles and sustain ongoing military operations, according to the budget office document submitted by White House Budget Director Russell Vought.

Support for agriculture and energy sector

An additional $11.1 billion is earmarked to support American farmers, reflecting wider domestic economic pressures included in the US budget request.

The Department of Energy would receive $672 million for activities aimed at ensuring what the document describes as the “full and verifiable termination” of Iran’s ability to develop or acquire nuclear weapons.

Diplomatic security funding included

The State Department is set to receive $300 million to improve security and renovate diplomatic facilities in countries near Iran. Several US diplomatic buildings have reportedly been targeted during the conflict.

The proposal highlights increased security concerns in the region and the need to reinforce US diplomatic infrastructure.

Call for swift Congressional approval

In his letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Budget Director Russell Vought urged Congress to act quickly on the US budget request, describing the funding as urgent and necessary.

The request now moves to Congress for review, where it will undergo debate and potential amendments before any approval is granted.
