What does the Trump–Denmark agreement on Greenland include?

Date:

US President Donald Trump announced that he has reached an agreement with Denmark on Greenland under which the United States will establish a significant military presence on the Arctic island, while US adversaries will be barred from establishing their own bases there.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that no US adversary would be able to make sensitive investments in Greenland without Washington’s approval, stressing that the agreement has no expiration date.

“We worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to ensure that the United States will forever have every ability to do whatever is required in Greenland to safeguard and defend the security of Greenland, as well as that of the United States of America,” Trump wrote.

“Going forward, no US adversary will ever be able to have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland or make sensitive investments in Greenland without our express written approval,” Trump said.

Frederiksen confirms agreement with US on Greenland

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen welcomed the agreement announced by the US president on Greenland, assuring that it would be “good for NATO and Europe.” The agreement “recognises the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom [of Denmark], as well as the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination,” Frederiksen said.

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also welcomed the compromise, saying it “guarantees and strengthens the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States and the Western alliance.” The agreement “recognises Greenland’s interests and our position in international cooperation,” he added.

US President Donald Trump, who had previously expressed a desire to annex Greenland, provoking strong reactions from European leaders, announced the agreement on Truth Social. Under the deal, the United States will establish a significant military presence on the Arctic island, while US adversaries will be prevented from establishing bases or making investments in sensitive sectors without Washington’s consent.

“This agreement ensures that China and Russia cannot have a base in Greenland, that they cannot send troops there, and that the necessary mechanisms are in place to prevent any investment in sensitive sectors,” a State Department official said on condition of anonymity.

The agreement is expected to be signed next week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
