Western countries increasingly fear World War III

Date:

Rising alarm across Western nations

A recent POLITICO poll reveals that citizens in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., France, and Germany are increasingly concerned about the likelihood of global conflict. Many respondents believe that a third world war could occur within the next five years, reflecting heightened public anxiety about international security.

Concerns versus willingness to pay

While most voters support higher defense spending in principle, the poll shows reluctance when trade-offs are required, such as tax increases, cuts to other services, or higher government debt. Seb Wride, head of polling at Public First, said, “Growing concern about war does not give leaders license to spend heavily on defense,” highlighting the dilemma faced by NATO and Western governments.

Country-specific perspectives

The survey indicates that Americans and British respondents perceive the greatest likelihood of global conflict, with 46 percent of Americans and 43 percent of U.K. respondents calling it “likely” or “very likely” by 2031. In contrast, Germans remain the least worried about a global war in the next five years.

Respondents also identified perceived threats: Russia tops Europe’s list, while Canadians see U.S. policies under President Trump as the greatest risk to security. France, Germany, and the U.K. also cited the U.S. as a secondary concern, ahead of China.

Defense spending and military policies

Support for increased defense spending remains conditional. In Germany and France, backing for higher budgets drops sharply when respondents consider the financial trade-offs, with only 24 percent of Germans and 28 percent of French voters still in favour. Skepticism also exists toward proposals such as an EU standing army, which received minimal support in Germany (22%) and France (17%).

Mandatory military service appears more popular in France and Germany, where around half of respondents support the idea. The findings underline the challenge Western governments face in balancing public concern about war with financial constraints and political realities.

Implications for NATO and Europe

The poll results come ahead of the Munich Security Conference, highlighting the tension between public anxiety and the practical limits of defense investment. As NATO leaders convene in Germany, they must navigate a complex landscape where fear of conflict is high, but willingness to fund military security is limited.
