Another day of bloody incidents in Mexico: five members of the same family were murdered on Monday in Acapulco (south), while a patient was finished off inside the hospital where he was receiving treatment in Atlixco (central), where two police officers who responded were also shot dead.
The five family members were killed by a group of armed men who injured two others after storming a residence in a neighbourhood in Acapulco on Monday morning, local authorities reported.
The Guerrero state prosecutor’s office announced it has launched an investigation into the case.
Generally, most homicides in Mexico go unpunished.
In Guerrero state, gangs are fighting for control of drug trafficking and the routes through which it is conducted.
On Friday, authorities announced that 14 people had gone missing. On 6th October, the mayor of Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero state, Alejandro Arcos, 43, was beheaded just days after taking office.
In Puebla state (central), armed men finished off a patient at the Atlixco hospital on Monday and also murdered two police officers, according to authorities.
The assailants shot their victim ten times, who “arrived at the hospital on Sunday morning on his own, injured by gunfire,” explained Daniel Iván Cruz, the Secretary of Public Security in the Puebla state government, during a press conference.
Responding to an emergency call about the attack, police officers became targets themselves, and two of them “were killed on the spot.”
Authorities are investigating whether the patient, approximately 30 years old, was involved in illegal activities, according to Secretary Cruz.
Atlixco welcomed thousands of visitors over the weekend for the Day of the Dead celebrations.
In March 2022, ten members of the same family were executed in the town of 90,000 residents. Local authorities at the time attributed the incident to a settling of scores between criminal groups involved in drug trafficking.
