Washington summit invite for Christodoulides

Date:

Cyprus is assessing the Washington summit invite extended by US President Donald Trump to President Nikos Christodoulides, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said in remarks to “Protoselido”.

The invitation arrived last Saturday and concerns the participation of the President of the Republic, alongside other leaders, in a summit scheduled for 19 February in Washington.

Focus on Gaza reconstruction

According to Letymbiotis, the summit appears to centre on the reconstruction of Gaza and the launch of the second phase of President Trump’s plan, which is based on United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803. He noted that the Republic of Cyprus welcomed the plan from the outset.

He stressed that President Christodoulides’ presence is under evaluation based on all available data, in coordination with other invited member states and with consideration of the summit’s agenda. Letymbiotis also reiterated that the international community should support implementation of the Trump plan, highlighting that Cyprus, as a regional state, has already submitted a six-point proposal outlining specific aspects of implementation.

Annie Alexui case handled by authorities

Responding to a question about the Annie Alexui case, the Government Spokesperson said the matter is being handled by the competent authorities and that he is unaware of any contact with the Russian Federation. He referred to yesterday’s press conference by the Minister of Justice, who outlined the institutional procedures being followed.

UN contacts seen as constructive

Turning to contacts with the United Nations, Letymbiotis described communication with the EU and the UN Secretary-General as positive and constructive. He said these exchanges mark an initial discussion on the path forward in the coming period.

He recalled that the UN Secretary-General has repeatedly expressed readiness to resume Cyprus talks from the point where negotiations stopped in Crans-Montana. Letymbiotis voiced hope that the latest contacts will form another decisive step towards restarting meaningful negotiations.
