At least one person has been killed and several others injured during a Russian assault with unmanned aerial vehicles on the city of Ternopil in western Ukraine, where an apartment building was struck, according to the region’s military administration today.
“A residential building was damaged,” reported Vyacheslav Negoda, head of the military administration of the Ternopil region, via Telegram. “Unfortunately, there are casualties: one person has been killed, and there are seriously injured individuals,” the official added.
Serhii Nadal, another official at the Ternopil headquarters, also stated on Telegram that the upper floors of a five-storey apartment building were engulfed in flames due to the raid.
According to Nadal, residents of several apartments had to be evacuated urgently.
The city of Ternopil and its surrounding region were placed on alert for approximately two hours after midnight, according to the air force.
On 26 November, during what was described as Russia’s largest drone assault in nearly three years of war, power was cut to much of the Ternopil region.
The region and its namesake city, located about 220 kilometres east of Poland, had a population of over one million before the Russian invasion in February 2022, which forced millions of Ukrainians to flee westward or emigrate.
