Wildfire fronts burn across Greece, with dozens of active blazes stretching firefighting resources and threatening homes, businesses, and entire communities. Strong winds continue to fan the flames, making containment efforts especially difficult for emergency crews.
Uncontrolled wildfire fronts are burning in Patras, Arta, Chios, and Filippiada, while a new fire front broke out this morning in Megara, Attica. Throughout the night, despite the firefighters’ enormous efforts, the situation remained uncontained, and hopes now rest on aerial firefighting units.
In western Greece, the most severe situation is in Achaia, where uncontrolled fires have ravaged the southwestern outskirts of Patras. Homes have been destroyed in Tsoukaleika, while significant damage is reported in Vrachneika. Two factories have burned in the region’s industrial zone, and multiple homes have been consumed in Moiraika and surrounding villages. The fire threatened the village of Achaiko, swept through Kamenitsa—where houses were lost—and spread to Alissos. Ano Achaia was evacuated, and damage extended to businesses in Kaminia. In Voudeni, homes near the Prophet Elias chapel were being evacuated as residents stayed alert through the night.
Another major wildfire front is on the island of Chios, where overnight efforts to control the flames were hindered by relentless winds. Widespread evacuations took place, and 45 people were rescued by sea from Limnia. Entire communities, including Amanis and the central village of Volissos, were evacuated as the situation worsened.
In northwestern Greece, fires burned out of control throughout the night in Filippiada and surrounding areas within the Municipality of Ziros. The village of Gymnotopos was evacuated for a second time, while the old town of Filippiada was also placed under emergency conditions. Authorities issued evacuation orders for the villages of Gorgomylos, Gymnotopos, and Tsangaropoulo.
As fires continue to rage across multiple regions, aerial firefighting resources have become the last hope for containment. Despite tireless overnight efforts by ground crews, many fronts remain out of control as conditions remain volatile.
