Video – Fire in Kantu causes extensive overnight damage

Date:

A fire in Kantu is under investigation after it broke out at midnight on Monday in the Limassol community, starting from a vehicle near the church of Agia Napa and leaving behind extensive damage.

The Cyprus Fire Service responded immediately, but the fire spread quickly, burning five hectares of dry grass, wild vegetation, and pine trees, according to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis.

The incident was reported at 11:23pm on Monday and caused serious damage to the vehicle, with the fire spreading to the surrounding countryside. Efforts to extinguish the fire continued throughout the night, with all vehicles remaining on site until dawn. At first light on Tuesday, two aircrafts were deployed to assist by dropping water, supporting efforts to contain the fire.

Five fire engines from Limassol stations were involved, along with one vehicle from the Forestry Department, a Mobile First Response Unit from the Game and Fauna Service, and one fire engine from the British Bases.

The cause of the fire will be investigated today in cooperation with the police, with initial indications suggesting it may have started from the vehicle and spread to the countryside.

There was also a response this morning to a fire near the community of Tala in Paphos. The fire affected dry grass on a hillside near residential areas. Four fire engines from Paphos fire stations responded. Investigations are ongoing by the Episkopi Police Station.
