US defence support decision brings significant benefits to Cyprus

Date:

US President’s decision to approve the provision of defence equipment and services to the Republic of Cyprus is a historically important development that reflects the results of an explicit policy and orientation by the Cyprus government, which brings substantial benefits at the political, diplomatic and defence level, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said in a post on X on Thursday.

In a post on the same platform, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said that the US President’s decision to grant the Republic of Cyprus access to transnational sales of defence equipment and programmes is “a historic milestone in the Republic of Cyprus -US relations and strengthens the defence capability of the Republic of Cyprus and the National Guard, while highlighting the country’s role as a pillar of stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean”.

“Cyprus is recognised as a reliable, beneficial partner. This recognition is a clear signal of deepening and substantially strengthening cooperation with the United States of America,” he noted.

US President Joe Biden issued on Wednesday a presidential determination authorizing the provision of defense articles and services to the Republic of Cyprus. According to the White House, the presidential determination states that this action will enhance US security and promote global peace.
