UN peacekeepers increase patrols in buffer zone
The UNFICYP presence in Pyla has been reinforced following reports of unauthorised entry by Turkish Cypriot security personnel into the UN-controlled buffer zone, according to the United Nations.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said in New York that peacekeeping forces have increased patrols and are maintaining a visible presence on the ground in the area of Pyla.
He stressed that any unauthorised entry, presence or activity within the buffer zone constitutes a violation of the UN mission’s mandate in Cyprus.
UN stresses mandate compliance
Dujarric reiterated that the UNFICYP presence in Pyla is operating under strict rules, adding that respect for the mission’s mandate is essential for maintaining stability in the sensitive area.
“The peacekeepers have increased patrols and are maintaining a visible presence on the ground,” he said, noting that the situation is being closely monitored.
He also underlined that the mission remains in active communication with all involved parties in order to restore the previous status quo and prevent actions that could negatively affect conditions on the ground.
Efforts to maintain stability
According to the UN, maintaining calm and stability along the entire buffer zone remains the top priority of peacekeeping operations.
The UNFICYP presence is part of broader efforts to prevent escalation and ensure compliance with the established arrangements in one of the most sensitive areas of the island.
