UNFICYP condemns violent incident in buffer zone

UNFICYP condemned an incident in Nicosia involving violence in the buffer zone, warning that such actions threaten public safety and stability.

The incident took place on Markou Drakou Street, a civilian-use area within the buffer zone, where a group of individuals reportedly threw stones and fireworks towards the north. People in a nearby park and cafés were present at the time.

Immediate response from the UN

In a statement, UNFICYP described the acts as unacceptable and said they risk undermining stability on the island.

The mission contacted the competent authorities on both sides immediately after the incident. It continues to monitor developments and support efforts to establish the facts through a thorough investigation.

Call for restraint and respect for the law

UNFICYP reiterated its call for restraint and respect for the rule of law. It urged all parties and individuals to avoid any actions that could undermine peace and security in Cyprus.
