UNFICYP Chief outlines priorities after meeting with Erhürman

Date:

The UNFICYP Chief and Special Representative, Khassim Diagne, presented the mission’s priorities following his meeting on Monday with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.

Speaking to the press, Diagne described the discussion as “very productive.” He briefed Erhürman on UNFICYP activities over the past six months since his arrival on the island and exchanged views on ensuring continued peace and stability across Cyprus.

Diagne highlighted the recent renewal of UNFICYP’s mandate by the UN Security Council in late January 2026 and outlined four key priorities for the coming months.

Four main priorities

  1. Operational efficiency and resilience
Diagne stressed the importance of strengthening the mission’s effectiveness, particularly given a challenging economic environment. He noted that UNFICYP is among the few peacekeeping missions worldwide facing resource and liquidity challenges, but efforts to improve resilience continue.
  2. Consistent patrolling of the buffer zone
Ensuring safe and stable conditions throughout the UN-controlled buffer zone remains a priority. UNFICYP aims to maintain regular monitoring and prevent incidents.
  3. Support for intercommunal activities
The mission will continue its work to revive and enhance intercommunal initiatives, recognising their critical role in building trust between communities.
  4. Stabilising presence and political support
UNFICYP will maintain its stabilising role, contributing to broader efforts to support the political process in the future.

Diagne welcomed Erhürman’s commitment, noting that the Turkish Cypriot leader expressed support for the mission’s ongoing activities.
