Negotiations near conclusion
Negotiations at the UN Security Council are in the final stages ahead of the discussion of the mandate renewal of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). The Council is scheduled to meet on Thursday, 29 January, New York time.
Broad international support
Sources indicate that the United Kingdom and France, both permanent Security Council members, continue to support a comprehensive and lasting settlement of the Cyprus issue. Both countries back ongoing UN diplomatic efforts, the implementation of confidence-building measures, and initiatives led by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, his Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguín, and the UN Special Representative Kasim Diwan.
Russia and China also welcome UN diplomatic efforts, supporting a solution aligned with Security Council resolutions. The United States, along with non-permanent members like Latvia and Bahrain, appear to endorse the renewal of UNFICYP’s mandate and encourage constructive engagement from both sides.
Focus on dialogue
The United Kingdom supports intensifying dialogue, including expanded-format meetings held in Geneva and New York, as well as direct discussions between the two leaders, aiming to create momentum toward a resolution.
