First Cabinet resignation after election setback
UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting has resigned from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Cabinet, marking the first senior departure amid growing pressure over the possibility of a Keir Starmer resignation.
Streeting’s exit comes after what has been described as a disastrous performance by the Labour Party in recent local and regional elections.
“Vision vacuum” criticism in resignation letter
In his resignation letter, published on X, Streeting criticised the government’s direction, stating: “Where we need vision, we have a vacuum. Where we need direction, we have drift.”
He added that it was clear Starmer would not lead Labour into the next general election, suggesting that the party should now focus on a leadership debate centred on ideas rather than internal conflict.
Leadership pressure intensifies inside Labour
The resignation has deepened speculation around a possible Keir Starmer resignation, with media reports indicating potential leadership challengers are positioning themselves.
Angela Rayner, former deputy prime minister, is seen as a possible contender, while other figures such as Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham remain influential within the party.
More than 80 Labour MPs have reportedly called on Starmer to step down, while over 100 have expressed support for him to remain.
Labour’s poor showing in recent local elections has triggered widespread internal criticism, including the loss of control of the Welsh parliament and weak performance in Scotland.
Opposition parties, including Reform UK and the Greens, made significant gains at Labour’s expense.
Government warns against instability
Despite the growing speculation around a Keir Starmer resignation, Finance Minister Rachel Reeves has urged Labour MPs not to destabilise the government, warning against “plunging the country into chaos” through a leadership contest.
Starmer, who led Labour to victory in 2024, has vowed to remain in post and fight any challenge to his leadership.
