Organised groups and Turkish Cypriot political parties have expressed their readiness to provide assistance to the Republic of Cyprus in extinguishing the wildfires, according to the Turkish Cypriot press, as reported by the Cyprus Press and Information Office.
The “mayor” of occupied Nicosia, Mehmet Harmancı, contacted the Mayor of Limassol and expressed his willingness to offer any help needed to bring the fire in the area under control.
In a post on his personal social media account, Mr Harmancı, according to “Kıbrıs”, said: “Our island and its unique nature is our shared heritage. I once again send my best wishes for a speedy recovery to all those affected by the fires in Limassol and Paphos and sincerely hope the fires will be brought under control as soon as possible.”
Readiness to assist was also expressed by the “mayor” of occupied Kyrenia, Murat Şenkul, who posted on his personal social media account that he had been informed by the head of the Kyrenia “municipality’s” trained disaster response team that, if requested, they are ready to assist in fighting the fire in the Troodos area.
Online outlet Kıbrıs Postası reported that the Secretary General of the Democratic Party (DP), Serhat Akpınar, expressed sorrow over the fires in Limassol and Paphos, as well as the material damage and loss of human life. In a written statement, he said the “TRNC” is prepared to offer all kinds of humanitarian aid and cooperation.
It also reported that the leader of the Communal Democracy Party (TDP), Zeki Çeler, stated that the Turkish Cypriot “mayors” who declared their readiness to help combat the fires in Paphos and Limassol are true patriots. He called on the “Greek Cypriot authorities”, as he described the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus, to accept the assistance offered to them.
