Jurisdiction dispute in the Eastern Mediterranean
Turkey has sharply criticised the Greek-Cypriot administration over maritime jurisdiction issues in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Turkish Ministry of Defence stated that the Greek-Cypriot side occasionally raises claims that “create jurisdictional confusion” and aims to disregard the rights of the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)”.
Counter-NOTAM issued
In response, the “TRNC” issued a counter-NOTAM, which Turkey says nullifies the Greek-Cypriot notice. The Turkish Ministry of Defence insists that the NOTAM issued by the Greek-Cypriot administration is invalid, framing the move as part of ongoing tensions over control and airspace rights in the region.
Message on security for Turkish Cypriots
Ankara linked the issue to broader security concerns on Cyprus, asserting its role as a guarantor power. The ministry noted that the Greek-Cypriot administration has “turned Cyprus into a target” by allowing weapons accumulation and foreign use of the island. Turkey maintains it will continue to take measures to ensure the safety and rights of Turkish Cypriots and the security of the entire island.
