Rising tensions in the Gulf
US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, threatening to “massively blow up” the South Pars gas field if Tehran attacks Qatar again. The warning follows a series of escalating strikes in the Gulf, including Israeli attacks on Iran’s South Pars gas field and Iranian retaliatory strikes on Qatar’s Ras Laffan LNG hub.
Energy market impact
The attacks have sent global energy prices soaring. Oil jumped to nearly $110 a barrel, while European gas markets saw prices rise more than 25%, more than double pre-conflict levels. Ras Laffan, the world’s largest LNG processing facility, suffered extensive damage, though all personnel were reported safe.
Diplomatic fallout
In response to the attacks, Qatar expelled Iranian diplomats, and the Gulf states have condemned Tehran’s actions as “dangerous and irresponsible.” Trump emphasised that Qatar was not involved in Israel’s strike on South Pars, calling Iran’s retaliation “unjustifiable.”
Regional instability
The conflict has drawn in multiple states, including Israel, the US, and Iran-backed groups in Lebanon. The ongoing escalation raises concerns about energy security, regional stability, and the potential for further military confrontations in the Gulf.
