US President Donald Trump has described the American-Israeli war on Iran as a “small detour” that was nevertheless necessary, during a public appearance in Las Vegas.
The remarks came as Trump attended an event promoting his proposal to abolish taxes on tips, while also defending his administration’s economic record since taking office in January 2025.
‘Necessary action’ amid Iran tensions
Trump said the economy was performing strongly despite what he called a “small detour” involving Iran, referring to military action he argued was needed to prevent “very bad things” from happening.
He suggested the war was linked to concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, which Tehran has consistently denied.
The comments come amid continued political debate over the US role in escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Public opinion shows opposition
A recent Ipsos poll conducted between April 10 and 12 found that 51 per cent of Americans believe the military operation against Iran was not “worth it” given its costs, while only 24 per cent supported it.
Another Quinnipiac University survey released earlier this week showed that 65 per cent of respondents blamed Trump for the recent rise in fuel prices in the United States.
The same poll found that just 36 per cent approved of Trump’s handling of the situation with Iran, while 58 per cent disapproved.
