Trump announces extension after White House talks
The Israel-Lebanon ceasefire has been extended for three weeks following negotiations involving representatives of both countries at the White House, US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday.
The extension comes as the original agreement was set to expire on Sunday. Trump said the talks, which he personally attended, “went very well” and expressed optimism that a peace agreement could be reached within the year.
US involvement and regional security
In a post on Truth Social, Trump confirmed the Israel-Lebanon ceasefire extension, stating that the United States would work with Lebanon to help it defend itself against Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran.
He described the situation as progressing positively, adding that there is a “very good chance” of a formal peace deal between Israel and Lebanon in 2026.
Planned high-level meetings
Trump also said he expects Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to meet at the White House in the coming weeks.
President Aoun had earlier expressed hope to visit Washington to meet Trump and present Lebanon’s position, while stating he does not plan to meet Netanyahu directly.
Trump rules out nuclear option
During a press briefing at the Oval Office, Trump also addressed questions regarding Iran, stating he would not use nuclear weapons in any military action.
Responding to reporters, he dismissed the idea as “stupid” and emphasised that conventional weapons were sufficient.
“Why would I use nuclear weapons when we can handle things with conventional weapons?” he said, adding that nuclear weapons should never be used under any circumstances.
