A 27-year-old former beauty queen, Carolina Flores Gómez, who had recently become a mother, was found dead in her apartment in Mexico City. Authorities say she was shot 12 times by her mother-in-law, for whom an arrest warrant has been issued.
Video footage reportedly recorded inside the home shows the young mother walking through the living room before entering a room. Her mother-in-law, 63-year-old Erika Herrera, is seen slowly following her with her hands in her pockets. She then enters the room, after which screams and gunshots are heard.
The video, published by Mexican newspaper Reforma, also shows Carolina’s husband, Alejandro Gómez, holding their eight-month-old baby and asking his mother, “What was that? What did you do?” Herrera reportedly replied, “Nothing. She made me angry.” When he said, “What’s wrong with you? She is my family,” Herrera answered, “You are mine, and she took you away,” according to reports.
Carolina’s mother, Reina Gómez Molina, told Univision News that the incident was reported to authorities the following day, as the family feared for the safety of the couple’s child. Police have launched an investigation, while the Mexico City prosecutor’s office has issued an arrest warrant for Herrera and opened a case for intentional homicide.
Carolina had been crowned Miss Teen Universe for Baja California in 2017 at the age of 18, before moving to Mexico City. She was active as an influencer, sharing content about her daily life, travels, and fashion.
Following her death, friends and family have shared emotional tributes. Her friend Alexa Villalobos wrote on social media: “Carolina was beautiful inside and out. Caring, charismatic, and always willing to help. It feels impossible to believe that someone so full of grace could leave in this way. Taking a life full of dreams and love is unforgivable. I want justice for Caro, for her family, her mother, her little sister, and her baby, who was her greatest joy.”
Her former school, El Tesoro del Saber, also issued a statement expressing condolences and remembering her as a loving and kind student.
