Tragic death of 7-year-old girl in Kallithea after shocking accident

Date:

A tragic accident in the Athenian suburb of Kallithea has left a local community in deep mourning after a seven-year-old girl, Angeliki, lost her life in a horrifying incident involving a glass door.

The incident occurred while the child was under the care of her 37-year-old aunt, who had collected her from school as she did every afternoon while the girl’s parents were at work running their business. They were visiting a relative’s home at the time of the accident.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., while playing, the young girl chased a ball onto the balcony and ran directly into a large glass door, apparently thinking it was open. The impact caused the glass to shatter and left the child with severe injuries to her abdominal area.

Despite her aunt’s immediate efforts to stem the bleeding—being a trained nurse—and the swift response of emergency services, the injuries proved fatal. Paramedics from EKAB (National Emergency Centre) arrived quickly and began CPR, managing to transfer the girl to the “Agia Sofia” Children’s Hospital under police escort.

At the hospital, doctors from multiple departments battled for 40 minutes to revive her, but ultimately declared her dead.

A neighbourhood in shock

Neighbours reported hearing the glass shatter followed by the anguished screams of the aunt urging the child to open her eyes. One local resident, visibly shaken, described the scene as one of devastation and panic.

According to reports, the girl was excited about her upcoming birthday in just a few days.

The incident has left the local community heartbroken. The girl’s family is well-known in the area due to their business, and tributes have poured in from friends and neighbours expressing grief over the unimaginable loss.

Legal proceedings begin

Authorities have since arrested the 37-year-old aunt, charging her with involuntary manslaughter and child neglect. Legal procedures are ongoing as investigations continue into how the accident occurred and whether safety standards had been overlooked.

Grief at the hospital

Witnesses at the hospital described scenes of overwhelming sorrow, with the girl’s mother collapsing in tears upon receiving the news. Relatives struggled to console her, and friends of the family spoke of a “house silenced by grief.”

This heartbreaking event has prompted renewed discussions about child safety in domestic environments, especially regarding unmarked or unprotected glass installations.
