Third arrest in Paphos 48-year-old abduction case

Date:

Police in Paphos have arrested a third suspect in connection with the abduction of a 48-year-old woman.

According to police, a 44-year-old woman was detained shortly before 10:00pm on Sunday, 10 August, under a court warrant. She is the latest person to be arrested over the case, which also involves two other suspects- men aged 51 and 79- who are currently in eight-day custody to assist the investigation.

Authorities said they received information from Romanian authorities on Saturday, alerting them that a 48-year-old Romanian national, who had travelled to Cyprus in recent days with the 51-year-old suspect, was possibly being held in a Paphos hotel against her will. She was reportedly due to travel to Poland later that day.

Officers from the Paphos Criminal Investigation Department (CID) went to the hotel in question but did not find the woman there.

Later the same day, police located the 48-year-old outside Paphos airport with the 51-year-old suspect, calling for help.

In statements to police, the victim alleged that since arriving in Cyprus with the 51-year-old, they had been staying in a city hotel where he would not allow her to leave without his escort. She further claimed that on two occasions he took her to a specific establishment in Paphos, where she was forced to engage in sexual acts with clients for payment.

The 51-year-old man and the 79-year-old suspect were arrested under court warrants, while the 44-year-old woman- previously wanted by police- was arrested on Sunday evening.

Paphos CID is continuing its investigation into the case.
