Thieves exploited Germany’s Christmas closure to drill through a thick concrete wall into a Sparkasse branch vault in Gelsenkirchen. They ransacked several thousand safe deposit boxes, escaping with at least 10 million euros in cash and valuables. Police discovered the breach early Monday, December 29, after a fire alarm triggered.
Most banks shut from December 24 evening, delaying detection.
Furious customers demand access
Dozens gathered outside on Tuesday, chanting “Let us in!” One man, using his box for 25 years for retirement savings, said he couldn’t sleep without information. Another stored family cash and jewelry.
Sparkasse Gelsenkirchen spokesperson unavailable for comment.
Witnesses spot suspects
Reports described men with large bags in the adjacent parking garage stairwell on Saturday night. Early Monday, masked men fled in a black Audi RS 6 with Hanover-stolen plates, over 200 km northeast. Police investigations continue.
