Paphos tragedy: Restaurant worker found dead, woman in serious condition

A tragedy unfolded on Sunday morning in Paphos, where a 44-year-old man was found dead and a 32-year-old woman was hospitalised in serious condition.

According to the Cyprus Police, the incident occurred at around 9:45 a.m. when a 59-year-old restaurant owner in the area of Petra tou Romiou discovered his 44-year-old foreign employee and a woman unconscious in a basement area of the restaurant.

The basement was reportedly being used by the man as living accommodation.

Police officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and the Kouklia Police Station rushed to the scene along with an ambulance. Authorities confirmed that the 44-year-old man had died.

The woman, later identified as a 32-year-old from Nepal who works as a domestic helper in a village in the Paphos district, was taken to Paphos General Hospital with severe respiratory problems and is currently being treated in the intensive care unit.

During examinations at the scene, police found a rectangular metal container with burning charcoal inside the room. It is believed that the charcoal was used for heating, while fumes that accumulated in the enclosed space likely caused the man’s death.

The exact cause of death will be determined following a post mortem examination.
