The coldest night of this winter so far was last night + UPDATE

Date:

Cyprus cold weather made its strongest appearance so far this winter, with freezing temperatures recorded across the island and the coldest night of this winter confirmed on New Year’s night.

Last night was the coldest night of the winter so far for several lowland and coastal areas, according to KitasWeather.

As reported, the clear skies and weakened winds resulted in a strong temperature inversion being observed in many lowland and coastal regions.

The minimum temperature at the Athalassa station approached 0°C (specifically 0.8°C), while some areas near the coast dropped to as low as 3°C (Zygi, Larnaca Airport, Aradippou, Xylofagou).

UPDATE:

According to further data shared by Kitasweather, temperatures dropped to minus 6 degrees Celsius overnight in the Troodos mountain range, specifically in the area of Chromio.

Mountainous regions were at the centre of the cold spell, with the Troodos area experiencing conditions not seen so far this winter. The sharp temperature drop confirmed that Cyprus is currently going through one of the coldest phases of the season.

The cold was felt across the island, but higher-altitude areas recorded the most extreme conditions, as freezing air masses settled over inland and mountainous regions during the night.
