Just a few days after the large-scale clashes in Amsterdam between Muslim and Israeli supporters on the sidelines of the Europa League Matchday 4 game between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv, UEFA has opted to handle another “hot potato” differently:
The Beşiktaş-Maccabi Tel Aviv game, scheduled for Matchday 5 of the Europa League on 28 November, was initially set to be held in Istanbul. However, the tense relations between Turkey and Israel, coupled with the recent events in Amsterdam, led the European football confederation to move the match to the neutral venue of Debrecen, Hungary.
The decision was communicated by UEFA on Monday (11/11), with the clarification that it was taken for security reasons. Hungarian authorities have also confirmed that the match will be held without spectators in the stands.
