Thanasis’ mother denounces cover-up and corruption

Date:

The mother of murdered soldier Thanasis Nikolaou has spoken out once more, condemning what she describes as a relentless cover-up and a culture of impunity in Cyprus.

In comments about the ongoing private criminal prosecutions, she said she could not reveal details “because there is a war against us,” but thanked those who continue to keep the case in the public eye. “This is a serious matter that concerns us all, and it concerns a gifted child, Thanasis,” she said.

She referred to the most recent report by the criminal investigators and the letter of Deputy Attorney-General Savvas Angelides, who declined to prosecute those named in the report. She also mentioned the termination of Judge Doria Varosiotou’s service, saying she was removed “because she dared to speak the truth despite the pressure she faced.”

Afterwards, she described how her family came under sustained attack. “An inhuman bullying campaign against us began, from a gang of people online who seem to be coordinated. They attacked us publicly, and despite our complaints, they continue even now, provoking us with lies and distortions. They choose words to twist the meaning of things. What is our fault that we lost our child? What is our fault that they did not do their jobs properly? And what is our fault that they were accused?”

She said the campaign of abuse dishonoured her son’s memory: “They defame our dignity shamelessly with nonsense and lies, things even a child would not do. They insult the memory of our dead child because he is not alive to defend himself. It is inhuman. They do not see that he spoke from the grave with his silent testimony, testimony that fell into the dirty hands of ruthless killers.”

The family has filed complaints with the Minister of Justice and lawsuits against those responsible. “We were told our complaints were sent to the police chief, and we are waiting to hear what he intends to do. They should not think we will leave this as it is. I will denounce them internationally,” she said.

She concluded by saying: “The barrel of corruption, crime, cover-up and impunity has no bottom. If they had the chance, they would devour us. I feel like I am in a sea full of sharks.”
