Ten dead and more than 50 injured in Russian attack on Kyiv

Date:

A missile attack on Kyiv has left at least ten people dead and dozens injured after Russia launched a wave of missiles and drones targeting Ukraine’s capital early Thursday morning, according to local authorities.

Emergency services said at least 10 people were killed and 56 injured in the attack, which caused significant damage to residential buildings and infrastructure.

Residential building partially collapses

Officials reported that part of a multi-storey residential building collapsed after being directly struck, with six floors severely damaged.

Emergency teams were deployed across the city as rescue operations continued through the rubble in search of survivors.

Authorities warned that the number of casualties could rise as operations progress.

Ukraine condemns strike on civilians

Ukrainian officials said residential areas were deliberately targeted, with civilian casualties including children among the injured.

Kyiv’s military administration described the overnight assault as one of the most intense attacks on the capital since the start of the war in 2022.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that 3 July would be observed as a day of mourning in the city for the victims of the attack.

Russia claims military targets hit

Russia’s Defence Ministry said the strike targeted military and energy infrastructure as well as airports in Kyiv and other regions.

It also described the operation as retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory and claimed that hundreds of Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight.

Ukraine calls for stronger air defence

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged international partners to accelerate support for air defence systems, stressing the urgent need for improved protection against aerial attacks.

President Volodymyr Zelensky also called for increased support from allies, including additional cooperation on missile defence systems such as Patriot interceptors.

EU considers further sanctions

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said she would propose new sanctions targeting entities supporting Russia’s military-industrial complex.

She reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to maintaining pressure on Moscow until it ends its war against Ukraine.
