Takata: Vehicle licence renewals and MOT requirements explained

Date:

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis has been briefed on the decrees regarding vehicle recalls following the issue with defective Takata airbags, which have been sent to the Legal Service for a legislative review.

Speaking on the programme Protoselido, the Minister stated that efforts were made to verify whether distributors are carrying out the recalls and to inform the public.

Regarding vehicle licence renewals, he noted that vehicles announced by dealerships as subject to recalls, such as Mazda Demio and Honda models, can still renew their licences as no restriction has been placed on the Department of Road Transport’s system by the distributors.

However, he added that for another 9,000 vehicles where owners were informed but did not proceed with the recall, distributors have implemented a restriction in the Department of Road Transport’s system. “When these vehicles attempt to pass a technical inspection, they will be told that in order to obtain an MOT certificate, they must proceed with the recall,” he clarified.
