Municipality steps in to extend support
The Municipality of Amathounta has taken over the continued accommodation of survivors from the building collapse in Germasogeia, from Tuesday after Easter until Sunday.
In a statement, the municipality said it is fully aware that the individuals “lost everything – their home, personal belongings, and even their money”.
It added that it is intervening immediately to cover this need, expressing hope that the state will assume its responsibilities and demonstrate its social role “even at the last moment”.
Survivors still in temporary hotel accommodation
According to Civil Defence, nine of the 18 people who were living in the collapsed apartment building in Germasogeia are currently staying in a hotel at state expense, until a permanent housing solution is found by the Social Welfare Services.
The remaining residents had initially been accommodated immediately after the tragic incident that occurred on Holy Saturday.
Civil Defence clarifications
Civil Defence issued a clarification following the municipality’s announcement, stating that all 18 individuals were transferred to a hotel and hosted from the very first moment of the incident.
It added that meals and essential supplies were provided in cooperation with the Cyprus Red Cross.
The statement also noted that nine people currently remain in the hotel, including one tourist.
The other nine individuals have left the accommodation without informing Civil Defence, it said.
