Sudan crisis: Civilians besieged in Kordofan, hospitals seized

Date:

UN agencies warned Wednesday that Sudan’s 20-month war has plunged new areas into acute humanitarian emergency.

Kordofan trapped in siege conditions

Communities in Dilling and Kadugli (South Kordofan) face “siege conditions”, UNICEF reported. Sustained attacks continue in West Kordofan, while most of Al-Nuhud Hospital has been overrun – the latest of 198 verified attacks on healthcare since April 2023 that have killed over 1,700 health workers and patients.

El Fasher: Deadly escape routes for civilians

Civilians fleeing militia-held El Fasher – described by UN relief chief Tom Fletcher as a “potential crime scene” – risk their lives on unsafe roads. The UN reiterated that anyone wishing to leave must receive safe passage and immediate aid access.

Children face starvation and separation

In North Darfur’s Tawila camp, thousands arriving from El Fasher have pushed services beyond breaking point. Nearly 950 separated or unaccompanied children were registered.

In White Nile State:

  • Over 30 % of children underweight
  • 1 in 3 stunted in El Jabalain
  • 13 % acute malnutrition in Tendelti

Humanitarian response critically underfunded

Despite delivering 132,000 litres of water daily and treating thousands for malnutrition, the 2025 Sudan humanitarian plan stands at just 35 % funded.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric urged donors: “We cannot stress enough – civilians must have safe passage and access to aid. Donors must step up now.”
