Shocking images of dead dogs have emerged from the buffer zone in Astromeritis, after a water tank reportedly overflowed, dragging stray animals to their deaths, the Green Party of Cyprus has said.
The footage, shared on social media, has provoked public concern and calls for urgent action.
Allegations of negligence
According to the Green Party, the water tank lacked any protective fencing, exposing the animals to a fatal risk. The party condemned the situation as “gross negligence” and demanded a full investigation to determine accountability.
Questions raised include: Who is responsible? Why was there no fencing? Why were no preventive measures taken?
Calls for immediate investigation
The party has urged the President of the Astromeritis Community Council to initiate a thorough and transparent inquiry without delay. It also called on the Evrychou Police Department to conduct a criminal investigation and ensure that all responsible parties face justice.
Demands for reform and accountability
In collaboration with the Cyprus Party for Animals, the Green Party demands immediate corrective measures, including:
- Full fencing of the tank
- Inspection of similar infrastructure in the area
- Accountability and exemplary punishment for those responsible
The party stressed that protecting life – both human and animal – is a duty, not a choice, and that negligence and irresponsibility must not go unpunished.
