A stormy weather forecast has been issued for Cyprus, with rain, isolated thunderstorms and snowfall in higher elevations expected over the coming days, according to the Department of Meteorology.
A low-pressure system continues to affect the region, bringing unsettled conditions through midweek and into New Year’s Day.
Weather conditions today
Today, the weather will start off partly cloudy, with the possibility of isolated rain and snowfall in the highest mountainous areas. Conditions are expected to gradually turn mainly clear.
Winds will blow northwesterly, moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort, and initially locally very strong, reaching 5 to 6 Beaufort. The sea will be slight to rough along the south and east coasts, while rough and locally very rough conditions are expected along the west and north coasts.
Temperatures will rise to around 14°C inland, approximately 16°C along the coast and about 6°C in the higher mountains.
Tonight’s outlook
Tonight, the weather will be mostly clear. Winds will turn northwesterly to northeasterly, weak to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will remain slight, becoming locally rough in western and northern coastal areas.
Temperatures will fall to around 4°C inland, 8°C on the south and east coasts, about 9°C on the west and north coasts, and close to 0°C in the highest mountainous areas. Frost is expected in mountainous and semi-mountainous regions.
Stormy weather forecast for the next three days
On Tuesday, weather will gradually become mainly cloudy. Local rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected during the evening, with snow or sleet forecast for the highest peaks of Troodos.
On Wednesday, cloudy conditions will persist, accompanied by local rain, isolated thunderstorms and snow or sleet in the highest mountainous areas.
On New Year’s Day, the weather will be partly cloudy. Isolated, mainly light rain may occur initially, while snow or sleet is again expected in the highest mountain regions.
Temperatures are forecast to rise slightly until Wednesday, remaining close to seasonal averages, before a slight drop is expected on New Year’s Day.
