Update:
A yellow weather warning has been issued as storm Barbara moves closer to Cyprus, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms and possible hail overnight.
The Met Office said the warning is in effect from midnight until 9am on Wednesday, with localised thunderstorms and hailstorms expected, particularly in western and northern areas.
The forecast:
A weather system named storm Barbara is moving east from the northern Aegean and is expected to reach Cyprus tonight (Tuesday), bringing rain, strong winds and possible hail.
Today, the weather will be partly cloudy and at times mostly cloudy, with a chance of isolated showers. Winds will initially blow mainly south-easterly to south-westerly, light at 3 Beaufort, later turning south-westerly to north-westerly, light to moderate at 3–4 Beaufort and temporarily strong, 4–5 Beaufort, along the south-eastern coast. The sea will be slight to moderate. Temperatures will rise to around 27°C inland and on the west coast, about 28°C on other coasts, and 19°C in the higher mountains.
Tonight, skies will become mostly cloudy, and after midnight storm Barbara is expected to bring local showers and isolated thunderstorms, initially in the west and gradually across other regions. Thunderstorms may be accompanied by hail, while winds could strengthen and shift direction. Winds will blow mainly south-westerly, light to moderate (3–4 Beaufort), later becoming strong to very strong (4–5 Beaufort) in windward areas. The sea will be moderate, and by morning rough in the west and north. Temperatures will drop to around 17°C inland, 18°C on the coast and 10°C in the mountains.
On Wednesday and Thursday, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected at times, with storm Barbara continuing to bring strong to very strong winds across the island. By Friday, conditions will improve with mainly clear skies, though occasional cloud cover is likely.
Temperatures will fall through Thursday, particularly inland and in the mountains, remaining well below seasonal averages before slightly rising again on Friday.
