Alpha C.K. Art Gallery will open a major exhibition of the historic Cypriot painter Stelios Votsis on Friday, 13 February 2026. The show features 37 selected works spanning various periods of his long career, offering visitors a comprehensive look at his artistic journey.
Legacy of Stelios Votsis
Stelios Votsis (1929–2012) stands as a key figure of Cypriot modernism and a pioneer of contemporary art on the island. His influence extends far beyond his generation, bridging local artistic traditions with international modernism. Over six decades, he shaped the post-war artistic identity of Cyprus, balancing gesture and silence, abstraction and lyrical minimalism in his paintings.
Early life and international recognition
Born in Larnaca, Votsis studied at Saint Martin’s School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art in England. He represented Cyprus in major international events, including the Alexandria Biennale (1967, 1972), Venice Biennale (1968, 1972), and São Paulo Biennale (1969). He co-founded and served as president of the Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts, promoting contemporary Cypriot art on both national and international stages.
Collections and legacy
Votsis’ works feature in prominent public and private collections in Cyprus and abroad, including the State Gallery of Contemporary Art of Cyprus, the Presidential Palace, Larnaca Municipal Gallery, Bank of Cyprus Collection, National Gallery of Greece, Ministry of Culture of Greece, Vorres Museum in Athens, and numerous other European and US collections. His enduring legacy confirms his significance in the history of modern art.
