Authorities warn on illegal electric bicycles on roads

Date:

Illegal vehicles increase risk

Vehicles that are not legally permitted on public roads significantly increase the risk of traffic accidents, potentially causing serious injuries or fatalities. Cypriot law prohibits the circulation of vehicles powered by mechanical, electric, or other energy sources that do not meet legal requirements.

Electric bicycles under the law

Electric bicycles fall under this restriction if their characteristics exceed legal limits. Only e-bikes with a maximum speed of 25 km/h or a maximum power of 0.25 kilowatts (KW) are allowed on roads. These vehicles do not require registration but cannot travel on highways or express roads. They may operate on other roads under conditions set by law.

Police enforcement

To prevent traffic collisions, the police conduct daily road checks to detect unauthorised vehicles. Vehicles found violating the law are confiscated. The measures aim to ensure road safety and compliance with the legal framework.
