The UK government has announced it will support the Ukraine uranium supply by providing enriched uranium for the country’s nuclear power plants, alongside a fresh package of sanctions targeting Russia.
UK increases pressure on Russia
Downing Street confirmed the measures ahead of a G7 working session focused on the war in Ukraine. Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned what he described as Russia’s “barbaric strikes” and pledged to intensify economic pressure on Moscow.
He said the UK would “turn up a gear” in its response and “choke off the revenues fuelling President Putin’s war”, while also helping secure Ukraine’s energy needs for the coming winters.
Energy support through nuclear fuel
As part of the Ukraine uranium supply arrangement, around £210 million (€243 million) will fund export financing to allow British company Urenco to supply enriched uranium to Ukraine’s state energy operator Energoatom.
The government said the move aims to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security and support the continued operation of its nuclear power infrastructure during the ongoing conflict.
Starmer reaffirmed Britain’s commitment, stating: “We will stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes, and this announcement reinforces that.”
G7 focus on Ukraine security
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to attend the G7 summit in Évian, France, for talks centred on peace and European security.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he hopes to persuade US President Donald Trump to increase pressure on Russia. He called for stronger transatlantic alignment in support of Kyiv.
“We want the Americans to say ‘we are with you, we will continue to help Ukraine, and we will put more pressure on Russia’,” Macron said in an interview with TF1.
Diplomatic efforts continue
The G7 discussions come amid continued efforts to coordinate Western policy on the war, with energy security and sanctions strategy remaining key priorities.
The UK’s announcement signals an expansion of support for Ukraine’s nuclear energy sector as the conflict continues to strain infrastructure and supply chains.
