Tragedy struck in Sotira early yesterday morning when a car ride among four friends ended with the death of 19-year-old Kristina Achilleos, a resident of Agia Thekla.
The fatal crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Agia Thekla Avenue. According to police, a car driven by a 19-year-old, with a 20-year-old passenger in the front and two 19-year-old women in the back seats, veered off course and collided with a concrete tank.
Circumstances of the crash
Police reported that the sedan, travelling under conditions currently under investigation, lost control near the Sotira overpass and struck a concrete tank.
The driver and front-seat passenger were injured and initially taken to Famagusta General Hospital before being transferred to Larnaca General Hospital. The second 19-year-old passenger, due to critical injuries, was airlifted to Nicosia General Hospital.
Authorities are investigating the speed of the vehicle and whether weather conditions at the time played a role in the accident.
Safety measures and ongoing investigation
All four occupants were reportedly wearing seatbelts. Alcohol and drug tests for the driver returned negative results.
The Famagusta Traffic Police continue to examine the full circumstances surrounding the crash to determine contributing factors and liability.
Community in mourning
The Sotira community expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Kristina Achilleos. Officials extended condolences to her family and appealed for caution on the roads, particularly during the Carnival period, to prevent further tragedies.
The funeral of the young woman will take place today, Thursday, in Sotira.
