Six of 13 mobile desalination units now operating in Moni

Date:

Six mobile desalination units are now in operation at Moni, with the full complement of 13 expected to be online by the end of the week, according to Deputy Director of the Water Development Department, George Kazantzis.

The mobile desalination units, brought in as an emergency measure, are designed to bolster the country’s water supply during a period of heightened demand and environmental strain. Cyprus is currently managing reduced rainfall, increased summer consumption, and significant fire damage to infrastructure in parts of Limassol district.

Kazantzis told CNA that the activation process has been slower than planned due to technical challenges. “There are six units in full operation and another two in testing,” he explained, adding that “all 13 mobile desalination units should be operational by week’s end.” Engineers from the manufacturer, based in the United Arab Emirates, have been working to resolve issues with automation systems and other technical complications.

Each unit can produce around 1,000 cubic metres of water daily. The six currently operating units are already feeding into the southern pipeline, providing water to Nicosia, Larnaca, and Famagusta. Meeting part of these districts’ needs through desalination will preserve reserves from the Kouris Dam for Limassol, which has faced additional strain following recent wildfires.

In Paphos district, the first mobile desalination unit began test operations earlier this week, though the water has not yet met the required quality for the public network. This is expected to happen within days, with another unit starting tests on Monday. Larger mobile desalination units for Paphos are scheduled to come online in September, further increasing capacity.

Kazantzis also noted that Water Department crews continue to assist fire-affected areas in the Limassol mountains by repairing pipelines and maintaining water supply, even though these areas fall outside the department’s usual jurisdiction.

The announcement coincides with a change in leadership at the Water Development Department, as Kazantzis steps down from his role. From tomorrow, Senior Executive Engineer Elena Phoinikaridou will take over as Acting Deputy Director.
