Farmers gather in Aradippou to halt animal culls

Date:

Farmers gathered in the SOPAZ area of Aradippou to prevent the culling of animals decided by authorities following the detection of a foot-and-mouth disease case at a local farm.

According to Sigma journalist Elena Louka, the farmers proceeded to block the road.

Neutral gathering to maintain biosecurity

Speaking on the “Protoselido” programme, farmer Pantelis Panteli explained that the farmers gathered at a central location rather than at a specific farm to avoid breaching biosecurity measures. He stressed that they understand the importance of following safety protocols and chose a neutral space for their protest.

Concerns over late-night notifications

Panteli denounced a practice where a farmer was informed by phone late the previous night that authorities would cull his animals the next morning. He described this as unacceptable, arguing that such measures undermine farmers’ trust in the government, especially after previous assurances that cullings would be suspended.

Call for direct talks with the President

The farmers are requesting a direct meeting with the President of the Republic to discuss the situation and receive clear answers on the planned cullings. Panteli stated that they do not want political parties or organisations speaking on their behalf, but wish to communicate directly. He added that the aim is simply to return to their farms and continue their work.

Distrust in veterinary services and ministry

Panteli highlighted that farmers feel they have lost trust in the Veterinary Services and the responsible ministry, noting that decisions are often unclear. Conflicting messages, including overnight notifications for culling despite prior assurances, have created unrest in the sector.

Impact on young farmers and investments

He emphasised that many young farmers have invested significant sums in livestock businesses, and such decisions directly affect their future. “These are businesses and investments involving large amounts of money,” he said.

Awaiting official statement

Panteli concluded that the farmers will remain at the site until the President provides an official statement on whether the culling will continue, underlining that they no longer trust other sources of information.
