“Should Israel strike Turkey’s nuclear plant?”

Date:

The construction and operation of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey have raised serious concerns due to geological, strategic, and political factors.

In his analysis, noted expert Michael Rubin highlights that Turkey is located in a high-risk seismic zone, making the plant a threat not only to Turkey but also to the rest of Europe. He also warns of fears that Turkey could exploit its nuclear programme to develop weapons, as has been the case in other countries using civilian nuclear programmes as cover.

The potential acquisition of nuclear weapons by Turkey would radically alter regional dynamics, given Ankara’s revisionist policies and support for groups like Hamas and radical Islamist organisations. For Israel, which has a history of military strikes on nuclear facilities in Iraq and Syria, the prospect of a nuclear Turkey represents an unacceptable threat. This is particularly concerning under the leadership of Erdoğan, who has often voiced aggressive rhetoric against Israel.

Rubin explores possible military or cyberattacks to neutralise Akkuyu, arguing that such an operation could be carried out covertly or in a way that avoids triggering NATO’s collective defence clauses. He notes that concerns about Turkey’s nuclear ambitions extend beyond Israel, with other NATO countries also worried about the potential instability and increased capacity for Turkey to act as a sponsor of terrorism without repercussions.

Regarding the situation in Syria and the future of the Kurds, Rubin, in a separate analysis titled “The US should prepare to kill Turks in Syria,” suggests that the United States should reconsider its stance towards Turkey. He argues that Washington should be ready to take action against Turkish forces operating outside their borders if they continue to pose direct threats to the security of American personnel and allies.
