Samuel L. Jackson: Oscar nominations are not an honour, winning is

Date:

In an interview with the Associated Press about his new Netflix film The Piano Lesson, Samuel L. Jackson stated that Oscar nominations hold little significance for him.

“We’ve been in the business long enough to know that, you know, the folks who go ‘Well, it’s just an honour to be nominated’ – No, it ain’t. It’s an honor to win,” Jackson remarked in a video shared by AP on X, eliciting laughter from his co-star Michael Potts. “You know, you get nominated, folks go, ‘Yeah, yeah, I remember that’. Most people forget, you know.”

“They only remember the winner,” Potts agreed.

Despite a remarkable career spanning over four decades, Jackson has only been nominated for an Oscar once. According to People, he was a contender for Best Supporting Actor in 1995 for his role in Pulp Fiction, but the award went to Martin Landau for his performance in Ed Wood. However, Jackson received an Honorary Oscar at the 2022 Governors Awards, presented to him by Denzel Washington.

“And generally, it’s a contest you didn’t volunteer to be in,” Jackson continued. “They nominate you, and folks go, ‘What is that they nominated [you] for? What’s the name of that thing?’ And then, after it’s over, people have a hard time remembering who even won.”

The Piano Lesson, based on August Wilson’s play of the same name, is now streaming on Netflix.
