SafeCY emergency alert feature launched for citizens

New SafeCY alert system activated

A new emergency notification feature for security, danger, or crisis incidents has been launched through the SafeCY application, Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Nikodemos Damianou announced on Wednesday.

The upgrade was implemented in cooperation with the Interior Ministry and Civil Defence as part of efforts to strengthen early warning and citizen protection mechanisms. Damianou said the government considers the rapid and effective information of citizens a top priority, stressing that the use of technology is essential.

Targeted notifications based on location

Following the activation of SMS warning messages, the SafeCY app has now been upgraded to send push notifications to users who have installed the latest version.

Civil Defence will be able to send emergency alerts either to all users or specifically to those located within the affected geographical area. All users will also be able to view notifications sent through the system, regardless of their location.

The Deputy Minister described the new feature as an additional communication channel that complements SMS alerts, which were tested last week with telecommunications providers with very satisfactory results.

Part of multi-layer warning system

Damianou noted that sirens and instructions from local authorities remain the main emergency warning method, but the new SafeCY functionality creates a multi-level notification system that did not exist before.

He added that the main warning mechanism will be the Early Warning System based on cell broadcasting technology, which is currently being implemented and is expected to be operational in early June.

Over 170,000 downloads of SafeCY

The SafeCY application has already exceeded 170,000 downloads. Citizens are urged to install or update the app through Google Play or the Apple Store, enable notifications, and allow location access to receive alerts.

Telephone support for the application is now available through the call centre 1450, while authorities thanked the KIOS Centre of Excellence at the University of Cyprus for assisting with the upgrade.

Authorities urge citizens to follow instructions

Officials stressed that the new function is a supplementary tool for faster information and self-protection. In case of an emergency alert, citizens should follow Civil Defence instructions, move to underground areas where available, stay indoors away from windows, or go to the nearest safe interior space until further guidance is issued.
