Rescue underway after avalanche near Truckee
Nine backcountry skiers remain missing following an avalanche in California’s Lake Tahoe region, authorities reported. Six others have been rescued after becoming stranded, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred around 11:30 PST (19:30 GMT) in the Castle Peak area, near Truckee. Dangerous weather conditions persist, with a high risk of further avalanches.
Survivors sheltered as rescue teams respond
Rescue operations involve “highly skilled ski teams” from nearby resorts, including Boreal Mountain Ski Resort and Alder Creek Adventure Center. The six known survivors have been instructed to shelter in place due to ongoing risks, with two taken to hospital.
Initially, authorities reported 16 people were involved – four guides and 12 clients – but the number was later revised to 15. Forty-six emergency responders are assisting in the ongoing search.
Avalanche conditions rated high
The Sierra Avalanche Center issued a high danger rating of 4 out of 5. Large avalanches are expected to continue through Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning. The trapped avalanche was rated D2.5 on a scale from D1 to D5, which can cause injuries or fatalities.
The skiers were on the final day of a three-day backcountry skiing trip, which included two nights at huts and traversing 4 miles (6.4 km) of rugged terrain while carrying supplies.
Officials warn of continued risks
Capt Russell Greene of the sheriff’s office described the search as a “slow, tedious process” due to the high avalanche risk to rescuers. Skiers sheltering under tarpaulin are “doing the best they can to survive.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom said state authorities are coordinating a full search-and-rescue effort with local teams.
Severe winter conditions compound danger
Boreal Mountain Ski Resort reported 30 inches (76 cm) of snow in the last 24 hours and closed due to high winds and low visibility. The storm has also forced closures on major highways, including Interstate 80 and Highway 50.
