Red Flag: New platform aims to help prevent gender-based violence

Date:

The Red Flag platform is being developed to help identify warning signs linked to gender-based violence and potential femicides, Direct Democracy Cyprus MP Diana Constantinidou said during an interview on Sigma’s “Protoselido” programme.

According to Constantinidou, the platform will bring together warning signs identified by relevant bodies, including the Police, Social Welfare Services and non-governmental organisations. The aim is to identify cases at an early stage that could potentially escalate into serious incidents of violence or femicide.

Data protection remains a key concern

Constantinidou stressed the need for strong safeguards for personal data, warning that any leak could put women and children at greater risk.

The Red Flag platform is based on a model used in Norway, she said, adding that an appropriate legislative framework would need to be established in Cyprus.

The discussion comes amid wider concerns over gender-based violence and the protection available to victims.

Gaps remain in victim support

Constantinidou said many women return to abusive environments because they do not have sufficient protection options.

She cited Ayia Napa as an example, saying there is no shelter there for abused women.

“It is not only about telling women to speak up and report. It takes strength,” she said, calling for a comprehensive effort by the state and relevant authorities.

2028 presidential election plans

Asked about the 2028 presidential election, Constantinidou said Direct Democracy Cyprus has not yet taken any specific decisions.

She left open the possibility of selecting candidates through the party’s application and involving citizens in the process.
