Recommendations for protection against increased dust levels

Date:

– Cyprus Pulmonary Society issues health advisory –

The Cyprus Pulmonary Society wishes to inform the public about the health effects and precautions that vulnerable population groups should take in light of the increased levels of atmospheric dust observed in recent days.

Health risks:

Inhalation of dust particles can cause or worsen respiratory conditions such as:

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Bronchial asthma
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Pulmonary fibrosis

Additionally, it may lead to symptoms including:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Irritating cough
  • Wheezing
  • Hoarseness

According to official data from the Air Quality Monitoring Network, elevated concentrations of airborne particles (PM10, PM2.5) are currently being recorded across a wide range of particle sizes.

These levels exceed recommended safety thresholds and pose serious public health risks, especially to vulnerable population groups.

Exposure to fine particulate matter and pollutants can cause lung irritation, breathing difficulties, coughing, and reduced respiratory function. High concentrations have been associated with worsening of respiratory diseases, weakening of the immune system—making individuals more susceptible to infections—and an increased risk of cardiovascular events by promoting inflammation and oxidative stress.

Fine airborne particles (dust) can penetrate the respiratory system, impair lung function, and may trigger or aggravate conditions such as COPD, asthma, arrhythmias, and cardiovascular disease. They can also cause allergy-type respiratory reactions with symptoms like coughing, nasal congestion, sneezing, as well as allergic responses affecting other systems, such as watery eyes or the sensation of a foreign object in the eyes.

Chronic exposure to such fine particles and related pollutants can have cumulative effects on health, having been linked to the development of respiratory diseases, gradual decline in lung function, cardiovascular disorders, and certain types of cancer.

Recommendations from the Cyprus Pulmonary Society (CPS):

✅ Avoid all prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity, especially during the warmer hours of the day.
✅ Keep doors and windows closed. Use air conditioning with clean filters or indoor air purifiers.
✅ Vulnerable groups (children, the elderly, people with asthma, COPD, or heart conditions) should avoid exposure entirely.
✅ Patients with respiratory diseases should strictly follow their medical treatment and consult their healthcare provider if symptoms worsen. Asthma and COPD patients may need to increase their inhaler dosage according to their physician’s prescribed management plan.
✅ Monitor pollution levels through the official “Air Quality Cyprus” app or the website www.airquality.gov.cy.

The Cyprus Pulmonary Society continues to monitor developments closely and remains available to support the State and citizens with information and scientific guidance.
